Simone Rocha’s Spring 2026 collection brought a taste of girlhood to the London Fashion Week runway this past Sunday, Sept. 21, with its overarching theme being the transitional period to young adulthood. Inspired by Maureen Freely’s essay “My Dress Rehearsal: or How Mrs. Clarke Taught Me How to Sew,” found in the picture book “Entering the Masquerade: Girls from Eleven to Fourteen,” this show was all about tackling the awkward period of growing up that all young girls face.
Contrary to the coming-of-age teenager feel to the show, Rocha held it in the iconic Mansion House in London. Built in 1739, the luxurious ballroom seemed to clash with the theme of her collection. When asked about her choice of location, Rocha claimed it was exactly her intention. In an interview with Vogue, she said she loves, “...putting it [the show] somewhere where it looks like it should but maybe doesn’t belong.”
At the heart of this collection was the story of a young girl tackling the uncomfortable moments amidst her blossoming period of life. The sheer fabrics of dresses and skirts were elevated with awe-inspiring elements like sequins, crinolines, and bustles.
The catch? Many of the runway looks had a vexing, chaotic element to them. Whether it be an asymmetrical jewelry piece or a silver bra strap slipping off the shoulder, the outfits all had a wonky element to them. Even the positioning of models and their postures added to the abnormality, with many clutching pillows to their chests in discomfort.
Ultimately, this clever attention to detail beautifully showcased the overall theme of growing up and navigating one’s natural insecurities. The collection served as a tribute to teens all over the world, letting them know that they are not alone.
