The 2023 Golden Globes Red Carpet Recap

The 2023 Golden Globes Red Carpet Recap

By: Emma Greene

The 80th Golden Globe Awards took place last night after a hiatus in 2022. The ceremony and its red carpet gave the highly anticipated first glimpse into 2023 red carpet fashion. Trends ranged from metallics, ruffles, and dreamlike details to gothic lace and all black ensembles. The variety of this red carpet leads us to believe that this year has many exemplary fashion moments in store.

Donald Glover in Saint Laurent

Glover wore what appeared to be pajamas under a boxy tuxedo jacket at his third Golden Globe Award ceremony. He told AP, “I just want to be comfortable,” when interviewed on the carpet.

Anya Taylor-Joy in Dior

Taylor-Joy’s sunny two-piece, complete with bows on both her bralette and column maxi skirt was the perfect combination of simple and chic. She completed the look with a matching Tiffany & Co. necklace, bracelets, and earrings.

Jenna Ortega in Gucci

Ortega’s pleated, flowing gown gave her a goddess-like glow. The unique cut outs and layering of the ensemble provided a modern twist to her otherwise timeless taupe ensemble, accented by Tiffany & Co jewelry.

Niecy Nash in Dolce and Gabbana

In her ethereal ensemble, Nash looked as if she were walking through plum-colored clouds. Capes were also a common theme of the evening, as Jamie Lee Curtis opted for a black lace cape and pantsuit combo.

Michelle Williams in Gucci

Eccentric and whimsical, William’s cream  gown featured an asymmetrical hem with seafoam green glitter along the edge of its ruffles. The striking ensemble beautifully complimented her light skin and hair.

Daisy Edgar-Jones in Gucci

Embracing the red carpet’s gothic inspiration and love of sequins, Edgar-Jones wore a Gucci gown which featured a black lace and sequin corseted bodice and a whimsical tulle skirt.

Tyler James Williams in Amiri

To accept his first Golden Globe award for work in Abbott Elementary, Williams donned a relaxed interpretation of the classic pinstripe suit. Paired with a white shirt sans tie, Williams’s look featured a tie-dye-esque pattern.

MJ Rodriguez in Balmain

Rodriquez won Best Actress in a Drama Series in a whimsically draped midnight blue gown which appeared to wrap her in a bow. She paired the gown with gold Louboutin heels.

Emma D’Arcy in Acne Studios

D’Arcy wore an oversized tuxedo jacket complete with both trousers and a skirt underneath. The look was accented with matching indigo hair and gloves. Nominated for Best Actress, D’Arcy’s look was a nod to their nonbinary gender identity. They hoped the look would draw attention to the growing need for nonbinary and trans representation within the industry saying, “nothing says nonbinary like wearing both a skirt and trousers.”

Billy Porter in Christian Siriano

This jaw dropping fuschia number by Porter perfectly encompasses the 2023 Golden Globes. Winning in the Supporting Actor in a TV Series category, Porter donned rhinestone studded platform boots under his velvet and silk gown. Committed to redefining masculinity, Porter first wore a tuxedo dress to the 2019 Oscars, a look which is now on display at the V&A Museum of London alongside the Gucci dress Harry Styles wore on the December 2020 issue of Vogue.

With these stunning looks and more, the Golden Globes certainly set the bar high for red carpet fashion in 2023. For more red carpet content like this, read umsquaremagazine.com and follow us on Instagram @um.squaremagazine.
