Prada Fall/Winter 2023 Menswear Collection

Prada Fall/Winter 2023 Menswear Collection

By: Kate Kimberlin

Milano Men’s Fashion began this weekend, with many premier fashion houses debuting their lines of menswear for the fall and winter seasons. Italian fashion house Prada debuted their “LETS TALK ABOUT CLOTHES” line under creative directors Raf Simmons and Miuccia Prada. The event was notably star studded, with guests like Adam DiMarco of The White Lotus and K pop group Stormzy all dressed in the new collection.  While the nearly 115-year-old brand has always focused on travel accessories and ready-to-wear fashion, Simmons said that the collection is “about archetypal clothing, about taking the recognizable but changing it through silhouette and cut.”

The collection appears to be basic on the surface, but has many twists and turns while staying true to the minimalism of the brand. With colorful oversized collars, boxy tailoring and notes of aviation themes in the moody coloring, the collection is simultaneously a look to Prada’s history while proving Simmons’ love for futurism.

Despite the collection focusing widely on staple pieces of men’s fashion, the story of “LETS TALK ABOUT CLOTHES” is merging the past and the future. With nods to 1960s futurism in monochromatic boxy suits and oversized colorful collars mixed with notes of Prada’s past like the reappearance of bomber jackets, the collection is loud without being overstated. Interesting textures like suedes and fun new accessories popping up like tote bags and ballooned bomber jackets, the collection proves that while the Co-Creative Directors want to spark conversations about the past and the future, they want to have fun too.

The textures in this collection are an integral part of the pieces since the goal is elevated simplicity. The balance of dark tweeds, linens, and satin found in the suits and bombers with the pops of color found in leather accessories is what sparks the conversation of how pieces can come together and tell a story.

While not the most eye catching collection to come out of Milan Men’s Fashion Week, “LETS TALK ABOUT CLOTHES” has proved several things for the brand: Co-Creative Directors Simmons and Prada know how to invoke thoughtful stories into their collections and know that staying true to the history of a brand proves to be worthwhile in the long run.
