The Influence of Technology on Performance Runways

The Influence of Technology on Performance Runways

As fashion evolves, so do the quality and scale of the runways showcasing it. Gone are the fashion parades simply used to present new pieces; nowadays runways have slowly begun to live up to the name “fashion shows.” Social media makes it easy to find photographs of new collections, so fashion houses must be more extravagant in their shows to encourage people to watch them live rather than relying on Vogue coverage. Recently, many fashion houses have begun using theatrics to capture their audience's attention and help further communicate the significance of their collections. While controversial, there is no denying the impact this approach is having on the world of fashion and the evolution of runways.

A perfect example of how to make social commentary through a collection, Courrèges devoted their fall/winter collection to showing the long-lasting effects of technology. Many of the pieces were created with this idea in mind. Hoodies were designed to make the models look as if they were hunched over, and armholes were added to the front of the piece so that holding a mobile device would be easier. A few of the models were engrossed in their phones while walking the runway to show the extent of society’s obsession.

Coperni is no amateur when it comes to runway theatrics, going viral last year for Bella Hadid’s iconic spray-on dress. Last season, they decided to go even further by including Spot robots from the company Boston Dynamics on the runway alongside the models. Instead of using machines to make social commentary, Coperni simply wanted to pay homage to one of its biggest inspirations: technology. The robots went as far as to interact with the models, taking and holding their purses and other accessories as they walked the runway.

Reflecting on human perception, Anrealage’s fall/winter collection was all about the idea that things are not what they seem. Using UV rays, the looks were transformed from basic white with no distinguishable front or back to outfits full of color and patterns. Another great example of how to use technology efficiently on the runway, this collection served to remind us that things exist far beyond what we perceive.

Fashion has always been a direct reflection of society and the events occurring around us. With recent technological advances, fashion houses have begun to implement mechanics during shows to elevate their collections and make for head-turning presentations. As the performances get bigger, there is no doubt that fashion will be boosted to new and revolutionary heights.
