The New Wave Of Fashion

The New Wave Of Fashion

By: Elena Ossoski

The pressure felt by the fashion industry to take effective steps towards functioning as sustainably as possible has risen due to the lack of cash flow and flexibility to be as extravagant as they have been in the past.

Without their typical treasure chests full of funding for prodigal presentations of every new collection, fashion houses of all sizes have had to *gasp* get creative.

Our world is pushing for cultural, ethical, and economical change; therefore, wasting ungodly amounts of money on high-brow photographers, seizure-inducing lighting, and flying social media influencers all over the world for a thirty-minute show is just not practical and at the end of the day, it’s just plain silly.

I despise talking about the pandemic as much as the next person, but the uninvited age of change that we find ourselves in has sparked a global revolution. The fashion world is returning to its roots: it is becoming an industry that values, prioritizes, and nurtures creativity and innovation.

Over the last year, we have witnessed some of the most ingenious presentations from members of the fashion community. The 2020 Miu Miu campaign features shots that were taken backstage by Gigi Hadid on one of her disposable film cameras. Prada, her colleagues, and Hadid helped bring this creative take on a typical ad campaign to life, but campaigns are not the only aspect of the fashion industry that is undergoing a much-needed makeover.

Last July, Simon Porte Jacquemus put on the show of the summer. The Spring/Summer 2021 collection from Jacquemus was paraded around a runway that was planted in the middle of a field of golden barley plants about an hour north of Paris, France. The runway acted as the perfect pathway for the angelic and refreshingly diverse range of models that proceeded to glide through the flora, all the while draped in earth tones, intricate lines, and wearable pieces.

Although these changes may sound minuscule, wasting less money on the production of fashion shows and elitist marketing campaigns can push the industry one step closer to operating as sustainably as we all know they can.

What will we see next? Only time will tell.

Here’s to the new wave of fashion.
