Italy is home to some of the biggest fashion houses and best street style in the world. The streets of Florence, Italy are the perfect place to soak in centuries’ worth of style evolution. As the weather warms up and the layers begin to come off, the city’s favorite trends are coming to light. As you would expect in one of the world’s fashion hubs, Italian citizens are sporting some of this season’s biggest trends along with the classic pieces that keep the nation’s signature style so chic.

Asymmetrical necklines

Italian stores are full of unusual shapes this season, and asymmetrical tops and dresses are at the forefront. Asymmetrical necklines and one-shoulder styles add interest to otherwise simple pieces. These items are usually styled as the star of an outfit and paired with simple pants and accessories to keep the outfit in line with the more muted nature of Florence fashion.

Cargo pants

This season is all about excessive pockets, and we are seeing them on everything from jackets to skirts to vests. Cargo pants are the most traditional manifestation of this trend, and people in Italy are styling them like a pair of classic Levi’s, pairing their cargos with sneakers and basic tees for a casual day on the town.

Trench coats

Though winter has come to an end, the weather in Italy is still quite brisk in the springtime, and a trench coat is every Italian’s go-to for layering. Leather and suede versions are especially popular in Florence since Tuscany’s leather goods market is one of the best in the world, but all materials, colors, and styles of trench coats are welcome.

Maxi everything…

Maxi skirts and dresses have been popular for the past few years, and the trend seems to be even stronger this spring. In Florence, people wear maxi skirts in a more relaxed fashion, pairing them with sneakers and sweaters to keep the outfit looking light and chic.

…Except pants

Pants seem to be the one exception to the maxi rule this season, with many Italians opting into the capri pant trend that has been on the rise. Florence residents are mostly sporting capris made from linen and other lightweight materials in neutrals as well as bold prints.

Silk scarves

Boutiques all over Italy have shelves full of beautiful silk scarves in every color and pattern you could imagine. Whether they are being worn as a headwrap or a light scarf, silk scarves add playfulness to an outfit and are the perfect accessory for the spring and summer months.

Italian culture has always been at the forefront of the fashion world and the country will continue to be a hub of style in the decades to come. If you want to model your spring wardrobe after one of the most fashionable cities in the world, these items are the way to do so.
