White After Labor Day: Do We Still Follow the Rules?
White After Labor Day: Do We Still Follow the Rules?

Fall is officially here, and with it comes the century-old voice in our heads saying, “Are you sure you can wear that?” What was once a MUST-DO fashion rule has now been diluted to little more than an old wives tale.
The rule originated from the Gilded Age, where New York elites would hang up their whites after returning from the pristine Hamptons to the city for the fall months. This change of style by the early aristocrats trickled down to all social classes and stuck.
So what happened? We’ve seen this rule neglected for more than a decade now with Vogue’s “Winter Whites” articles in the colder months and Coco Chanel wearing white in Paris whenever she felt like it. As air conditioning came into existence — along with new generations — being a rule follower has gone out of style.
In a world where you can be anything you want, originality and innovation are in. People are becoming bolder with their wardrobes and breaking old rules formerly followed by the masses.
We see celebrities like Kendall Jenner, as well as Instagram influencers such as Mary Ralph Lawson and Matilda Djerf, sporting their whites through September and into December.
