Square Magazine Staff Picks: Thrifted Items

Square Magazine Staff Picks: Thrifted Items

By: Abby Fulmar

Throughout the last decade, thrift shopping has become one of the most common ways for people to curate their dream closet. However, even with the increased popularity of thrifting, many still believe that it requires extensive planning and traveling. That is a belief that Square Magazine and its team aims to eradicate. Square’s third annual print edition, “Consciously Modern,” highlighted the negative effects of fast fashion and established the magazine as a strong supporter of sustainable shopping, so it should come as no surprise that the Square staff are thrift shopping fanatics. By visiting both local thrift stores as well as unique vintage shops all around the globe, the team has procured an array of one-of-a-kind pieces utilized to elevate their wardrobe and express their unique style. If you are looking for motivation and inspiration to dive into the world of eco-friendly shopping, take a look at a few of our team members’ most cherished second-hand pieces and the interesting stories behind their discoveries.

Emma Greene – Co-Editor-In-Chief

“I bought this leather jacket at El Rastro, a flea market in Madrid, during my first week of study abroad. It’s my most worn transition piece this fall and I don’t see that changing as temperatures continue to drop! I’d been on the hunt for a jacket like this one for a while when I stumbled upon it. The leather is soft, obviously well worn, and cared for. I’ll cherish this piece for years to come.”

Sophie Smith – Editorial Team

“I was on the lookout for a super girly, Y2K sequin tank for nights out, and when I saw this one I knew I had to have it. I have always had a love for anything with a butterfly on it, so the detailing on the neckline really caught my eye. The tag was super cute too, and I even keep it on display in my room. This tank is definitely a favorite piece in my wardrobe.”

Joseph Hogue – Creative Team

“I love this piece so much. I thrifted it in a small store in Edinburgh, Scotland. It has a lot of sentimental value and it’s one of my most unique pieces. The collarless pinstripes accompanied by 5 buttons at the top are so stylish.”

Liv Briley – Copy Editor

“As a frequent flier at Goodwill, I like to think I’ve learned some tips for finding unique pieces. Anything that was likely owned by a grandmother/father before it was donated always ends up being my favorite. When I found this skirt, it still had that very specific smell that you only find at your grandparent’s house. After a couple of washes, though, it was good as new and I get complimented on it all the time. It’s hard to pick just one of my thrifted pieces to call my favorite but this one is tried and true for sure.”

Writer’s Choice

I found this beautiful vintage slip dress at my local Goodwill. I was lucky to find it because it was almost entirely hidden on a rack in the men’s t-shirt section. This just reinforces the notion that you must thoroughly search the entire store to find good pieces — do not let what the rack is labeled dictate where you look. This piece is special to me because I have never seen such a detailed slip dress before. The gold details around the neckline and the scalloped-edge split is so unique and reminded me of 1920s glamor.

There is nothing quite like finding a piece of clothing that speaks to you. The staff’s stories show that if you can keep an open mind and embrace the unpredictability of thrifting, you might find a special closet staple that you will cherish for years to come.
