2026 Is the New 2016: Why the Nostalgia Itch?
2026 Is the New 2016: Why the Nostalgia Itch?

When 2026 was only a few days old, TikTok searches for “2016” climbed by 452%. Taking advantage of the traction, TikTok made a new “2016 filter.” People took to Instagram, posting old pictures from 2016, captioning them and coining the trend: “2026 is the new 2016.” It seems that everyone is searching for old songs from their past playlists and perusing photo albums from their youth in search of that familiar feeling of nostalgia, but why?
The International Society for Research on Emotion describes nostalgia as, “...a widespread emotion about (sentimental) longing or wistful affection for one’s remembered experiences.” We can’t deny that there’s something about looking back on the past that moves us. Whether it’s to escape the present, inspire future ideas, or get a new perspective, nostalgia is a sought-after and recently trendy emotion.
There are a few theories as to why we’ve started to look back at 2016 with rose-colored glasses. The last year of the beloved app Vine and puppy-dog Snapchat filters certainly added to the time period, but what truly makes 2016 worthy of reminiscence?
Many will say things were simpler in 2016. The social media revolution was just getting started. Everyone was young, unfamiliar with social media, and having fun with their new selfie sticks. There was no TikTok, and no Covid-19 anxieties in the air; just chrome filters and photos of shoes arranged in the shape of a heart.
“Instagram was all about photos; we didn’t have to worry about Reels, we didn’t have to worry about updating our stories all the time. It was just a simple, chill life,” TikTok creator Joel Marlinarson said in an interview with the BBC.
Most of us experienced 2016 together. Instagram was six years old, and people began connecting all over the world. When people are given a window to share memories from their past, there is likely another, maybe hundreds of miles away, who can relate and say, “Me too!”
This wholesome—and slightly embarrassing—trend is not only reminding people of who they truly are, but it is also bringing people together. The driving force of this nostalgia is human connection. Sharing about our past connects us, and thus, the “2016” trend went viral.
Additionally, looking back on the last decade can ignite inspiration for future fashion trends, songs, movies, etc. This new year, we’re bringing back notions of 2016 style. Vogue claims ankle boots, silk and lace slips, skinny scarves, and moccasins will be back in action this year, and artists who dominated 2016, like Zara Larsson, are back and making waves in the music industry.
Nostalgia throws our minds to the past while simultaneously helping us move forward. Through recognizing the past, we can see where we want to go in the future. 2016 was a good year, and its celebration will undoubtedly inspire and shape what’s to come in 2026.
