Celebrate Christmas the Oxford Way

Celebrate Christmas the Oxford Way

By: Grace Logan

The University of Mississippi is conveniently located in a lovely small town. Many say that Oxford resembles the setting of a Hallmark Christmas movie. The Oxford Square looks like a “snow globe” during the holidays and the college town turns into a quiet little escape during the month of December. As the countdown continues, here are two of my favorite holiday spots in Oxford.

With shopping galore, the occasional appearance of Santa, and several fun activities that the town hosts during the season, visiting the Square is a must.  As someone who lives here, traditions are a big part of Oxford during the holiday season. The Annual Christmas Parade is a time where the community gets together each year and combines both the University and the town itself to create a fun atmosphere for the town.

Shopping during the holiday season is not complete without taking advantage of the complementary wrapping at several stores on the Square. It is not Christmas without a stop to see Santa’s helpers at Neilson’s, Lulu’s, or Oxford Floral. As the sunsets and the lights come on around town, the Square turns into the true snow globe. Walking around the Square under the lights while heading to dinner at one of the great restaurants makes the season feel complete.

Driving down the road to Taylor, MS, the small town has embraced the holiday season as well. Plein Air has become a place to gather with friends and family and embrace the holiday cheer. With Lost Dog Coffee, the Mill at Plein Air, and the restaurant GRIT, you can enjoy a fun escape a mere 15 minutes outside of Oxford. The holiday decorations have elevated the town once more. Lost Dog Coffee has several holiday specials that include drinks like Mocha Mint, Milkshakes and Hot Cocoa. There are recitals and weddings at the Chapel throughout the season and GRIT, a restaurant owned by a husband and wife team, has seasonal specials to get anyone into the holiday mood. Taylor is a great holiday spot to enjoy with friends and family.

Both the Square and Taylor bring exactly what the locals describe as a “Hallmark Christmas Movie” to life. With feel-good tunes and perfect places to gather with friends, both spots make the season extra special. The Christmas magic is present in the town during December and the holidays are an excuse for this small town to get together and celebrate another year. The only thing to do now is call the Hallmark producers and tell them we have a great location for their next holiday film.
