By Hardy Greene

As award season drives onward, it becomes easy to fall into a recency bias. However, there are countless classic films that must be watched in one’s lifetime.

La Haine

Mathieu Kassovitz’s masterpiece, La Haine, is a French black and white film that follows a group of teens throughout a day in Paris and its suburbs. The teens are pushed into action following an incident of police brutality in their neighborhood, leading to one of the greatest narratives in film.

A Bronx Tale

With the mob wife aesthetic making its way to the forefront, it is hard to look past legendary media such as The Sopranos, Goodfellas, and The Godfather. However, Robert De Niro’s directing debut,  A Bronx Tale, is a fantastic mob story from a unique point of view that should not be overlooked.

Blue Velvet

Blue Velvet is a David Lynch masterclass. The mystery movie follows a teen investigating the story of a severed ear, leading him into an odd flipturn of disturbing discoveries. The movie is a psychosexual thriller that not only leaves the audience shocked and confused, but impressed.

O Brother, Where Art Thou

O Brother, Where Art Thou is a hilarious movie that follows the journey of three escapees running from rural Mississippi law enforcement. This movie from 2000 has aged flawlessly and is still a fun watch, set close to home.

Film presents humans the opportunity to laugh, cry, shake in nervousness or in excitement like few forms of media are capable of. No matter which of these feelings one may want, there is a movie for it in this list.
