Return of Mid-Century Modern Furniture
Return of Mid-Century Modern Furniture
By Hardy Greene
Aesthetics and trends come and go. This applies to fashion, music, photography, cinema, and countless other spaces. Interior design, being one of these spaces, is susceptible to the cyclical nature of trends and popularity. One interior design style, mid-century modern, has followed this cycle's course and found its way back into the forefront of furniture for the first time since its original lifetime, typically defined from 1945-1970.
Coined by Cara Greenberg, mid-century modern furniture is, as the name suggests, identified by the time period's attempts at contemporary or modern shapes and designs. Often minimalist with clean lines and simple use of materials, this style of furniture has a noticeable, but understated look that maintains a certain timelessness.
In recent years, the spotlight has shown on mid-century modern furniture once again, driven through TikTok. Houses with mid-century modern interiors have been going viral for well over a year, bringing attention to legendary mid-century modern pieces such as the Herman Miller Eames Lounge Chair, Noguchi Table, and Wassily Chair.
As time continues to tick forward and trends fall in and out of the public eye, mid-century modern has stood its ground. This consistency has signified that mid-century modern design has returned with no intention of leaving the forefront in the foreseeable future.
