Dolly Through the Decades

Dolly Through the Decades

By: Hailey Layne

2020 has been a revival year of retrospective, eclectic style, bringing back elements reminiscent of the 1970s. Colorful cowboy hats further romanticize the American West, while teased hair and curtain bangs have returned. This particular style has been championed by one individual who creates a name for herself and paves the way for other female music artists: Dolly Rebecca Parton.

Without any fear of being seen as unpolished, Parton mixes prints, textures and sparkles. She lives life comfortably with her own body and features, but uses her style to also emphasize her personality. A dress covered in rhinestones seemed welcoming when Parton was wearing it. Her colorful clothing choices can be tied to her southern upbringing as she was born in Tennessee. Through her style, Parton manages to unite various geographic regions across eras to inspire individuality.

Parton repeatedly acknowledges that her image allows her to make a name for herself in the music industry. Her tall blonde hair provides a platform from which to support other women and those individuals that were ostracized in society. The sequins and embroidery that were sewn into Parton’s denim left threads for artists like Kacey Musgraves to follow when they began their journey through the music industry. Parton has never been distant in an industry where being yourself has been heavily scrutinized. Style is not only a combination of what one wears but how one carries themself and knowing who you are

“Find out who you are and do it on purpose.” -Dolly Parton

To this day, Dolly Rebecca Parton remains an icon who motivates and inspires both males and females alike to embrace fashion, generate individual style and strive for their goals as she did.
