How Does Your Workout Impact Your Skincare Schedule?

How Does Your Workout Impact Your Skincare Schedule?

Deciding when you should practice your makeup and skincare routine in relation to your workout is not always a simple task and can be a barrier for keeping a consistent routine. Many people spend good money on their skincare regimens and want to reap the benefits, but it is hard to factor in those morning, midday, or evening workouts when you have skincare on the brain.

Daily exercise can set the mood for your day. When thinking about the best way to layer your routines, the addition of skincare can be daunting, but dermatologists assure us that there is a place for skincare in your exercise routine.

The first step to ensuring you get the most out of your skincare and workout is to wait to apply the majority of your products until after the workout. You can cleanse your face with micellar water or a light cleanser, and are encouraged to apply sunscreen before, and then recleanse after the workout. When you have completed your exercise, you can apply any and all other products to receive their benefits throughout the day.

Purvisah Patel, MD, founder of Visha Skin Care says, “Your skincare products will do you more justice if applied to freshly clean skin and can be left on for the maximum amount of time. After workouts, you have more blood supply to the skin, and the products can work a little better.” For this reason, it is important to wait until after your workout to cleanse and apply products so that you reap the maximum results.

If you prefer your workout to be midday, there is a system for you as well. When preparing for your day, go about your routines as normal, but when it is time to workout, go ahead and use a wipe or micellar water to remove your makeup from the day. This will cause less mess when sweating and keep your pores as unclogged as possible. After your workout, do not worry about redoing your regimen. Use a salicylic acid wipe such as the Paula's Choice Gentle Cleansing Cloth to remove the deep grime from your workout, and then reapply sunscreen and makeup as needed. Dermatologists have said that by midday, your products have been soaked into your skin, so there is no need to reapply until it is time for your nighttime regimen.

Exercising in the evening is the simplest way to ensure your product's effectiveness. Same as midday exercise, it is important to remove all makeup products and other products remaining on the face before your evening exercise. Afterwards, simply cleanse and practice your regular nightly routine. If there is a bit of time in between your workout and bedtime routine, simply follow the same routine as for a midday workout and be sure to remove sunscreen well during cleansing.

No matter what, take rest in the fact that it is possible to maintain healthy skin while also sticking with your workouts. When your workouts and skincare flow nicely together, it will leave your body feeling refreshed and well cared for.
