How Legit Are Celebrity Charity Galas?

How Legit Are Celebrity Charity Galas?

By Emily Smith - November 11, 2025

Activism within the realm of fashion is a phenomenon that is not new to society, yet continues to surprise audiences around the world. With recent controversies surrounding celebrity and influencer-centered charity galas, many are left to question the legitimacy and integrity of such events.

Netizens recently raised concerns about the intention behind celebrity activism due to W Korea’s “Love Your W” event. Onlookers scrutinized event organizers and attendees via social media when posts revealed the event to be much less a campaign for breast cancer awareness and more of a celebrity party.

A wide array of stars were in attendance, ranging from actors and musicians to the biggest names in the K-pop industry. Things such as the choice of music, an emphasis on drinking games, and unclear funding allocation attracted criticism and raised questions regarding the legitimacy of these events yet again.

Dating back several centuries and gaining prominence in the 70s and 80s, the concept of promoting philanthropy through famous figures is a tale as old as time. Early examples include musicians like George Frideric Handel staging charity concerts throughout the 1700s into the 1800s. These concerts were often slated to benefit prisons and hospitals, and they were considered to be relatively successful, going on to become an annual tradition.

Perhaps the most notorious charity gala in recent years is the Met Gala, a luxury event filled with designer clothing and select stars of the time. With a guest list that’s invite-only, the exclusive gala captivates audiences all over the world.

The Met Gala is a benefit that serves as an annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. A theme is assigned as part of the opening of the spring exhibition, and the attendees’ elaborate outfits are highlighted in the media on what many consider to be the fashion industry’s most exciting night of the year.

The gala is considered to be one of the most successful celebrity-fundraising events, with money achieved through high-priced,  invite-only tickets sold at around $75,000. If a table is purchased, it’s around $350,000. Money is also made through advertising revenue.

While some praise celebrities for attending philanthropic events such as the Met Gala, others question the legitimacy of their intentions. After all, celebrities get exposure through the highly publicized, elite events. This leaves some to question whether celebrities attend because they care for the cause or simply to improve their image.

Regardless of intention, most celebrity-targeted charity galas are successful in raising funds for the cause they support. Such galas are a longstanding tradition and show no signs of dying out anytime soon. With criticisms and praises in mind, we can only look to the future and hope that events may be approached with sensitivity and appreciation.
