Sunrise on the Reaping Set Leaks and the Film Industry in the Age of Spoilers

Sunrise on the Reaping Set Leaks and the Film Industry in the Age of Spoilers

By Emily Smith — November 5, 2025

Suzanne Collins, the bestselling author of “The Hunger Games” series, is back with another hit novel and film. With Sunrise on the Reaping in production, fans are anxiously awaiting sneak peeks and behind-the-scenes content. But the question remains: At what point do fans cross the line, and what has prompted the sudden rise in spoilers compared to the preceding films?

To no one’s surprise, the newest dystopian novel in the popular series is getting a film adaptation. However, the announcement of the film struck fans as unusual. Rather than waiting to see the success of the novel, Collins and Lionsgate announced both the release date of the novel and the movie at the same time. The timing was perhaps attributed to the success of the preceding novels and films, and since Forbes named “Sunrise on the Reaping” as one of the most anticipated novels of 2025, they knew the book was fated for instant success.

Such a bold prediction of the novel’s success was not in vain. The book sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide within the first week, making it the biggest opening week for any “Hunger Games” novel. The sales were double that of the 2020 villain origin story prequel “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” and triple that of “Mockingjay.”

“Sunrise on the Reaping” follows beloved character Haymitch Abernathy. Set on the morning of his reaping, the book takes place 20 years before Katniss Everdeen. It details the events of the 50th Hunger Games and how it captivated the attention of audiences around the world. Nicknamed “Sunrise on the Weeping,” the novel is as tragic as it is important for warning readers about the power of political propaganda.

Many characters from prior installations of the series make an appearance in the book, and the lore of mysterious characters is a key takeaway. After heartbroken readers finished Collins’ latest work, many were left desperate for more. Specifically, more information about what to expect from the film.

With the announcement of castings came heightened excitement. Many online users praised casting directors, claiming it was one of the best castings they’d seen in years. Haymitch Abernathy is to be played by rising actor Joseph Zada, who was recently seen in “We Were Liars” on Amazon Prime. His lover, another main character in the novel, was announced to be portrayed by Whitney Peak, most known for her work in HBO’s “Gossip Girl” reboot.

The casting announcements were dramatic, and they included several big names in the industry right now. The star-studded cast, featuring McKenna Grace, Elle Fanning, Maya Hawke, Ben Wang, Ralph Fiennes, and Kiernan Culkin, caused the hype for the film to reach an all-time high.

But with such excitement comes pitfalls. The anticipation for the film prompted superfans to sneak onto the set after the commencement of filming. What started as simple pictures of fans with cast members and signed books quickly devolved into leaked images of sets, props, and actors in costume. While some deem this harmless, such spoilers run the risk of exposing what the movie will keep from the book and what it will change. Such decisions are what make film adaptations exciting in the hearts of many fans, and the continuous leaks leave some feeling frustrated and disrespected.

Many speculate that the leaks are due to the sheer volume of actors and industry workers on set. Compared to the prior films, the ensemble for Sunrise on the Reaping is likely to be much larger due to the plot of the novel. Haymitch’s Games is the 50th, making it what seasoned fans know as a “Quarter Quell.” Quarter Quells always have a twist, and in Haymitch’s case, the change to the Games was that double the number of tributes were reaped. Rather than 24 participants in the Games, there were 48—making the roster of actors alone double that of the preceding movies.

Whether or not leaks of major films are ethical is a question on the minds of many. While some praise those who are able to successfully get photos to share on major fan accounts, others express frustration with the leaks. Regardless of personal feelings on the matter, it appears that the leaks are here to stay in the realm of “The Hunger Games” and potentially in the film industry as a whole.
