Building the Ideal Fall Playlist

Building the Ideal Fall Playlist

By: Hardy Greene

As the Mississippi summer subsides and spending time outside becomes more bearable, the pleasures of life are enhanced. The joy of mild autumn weather can be improved by complementary music. Here are some of our music recommendations for window-down weather.

The Grateful Dead

The Grateful Dead is a genre-bending rock band that performed from the mid-1960s until 1995. The San Francisco-based group was led by Jerry Garcia and rose to iconoclasm alongside the psychedelic counterculture movement. Although many of us have been listening to them since childhood thanks to parents that double as “Deadheads,” they are a group that is extremely easy to fall back in love with. Some songs we recommend include “Eyes of The World” (the live version from December 10, 1973 is a great place to start), “China Cat Sunflower” (start with the August 27, 1972 show), and “Franklin’s Tower.”

Bob Dylan

Considered by many to be the greatest songwriter of all time, Bob Dylan is an artist who, like the Grateful Dead, can work between a number of genres. He is able to utilize the characteristics of blues, folk, rock, and even gospel to create his unique style. Some cuts we suggest are “Meet Me in The Morning,” “Tangled up in Blue,” and “One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later).” Dylan, on top of being a phenomenal musician, is also often discussed for his style, most famously his outfit on the cover of The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.

The Steeldrivers

The Steeldrivers are a bluegrass band made up of many members, most notably Chris Stapleton, who left in 2010. The band has produced five albums, all of which have landed in the top two spots on the United States Bluegrass charts. The three songs that we love are “If It Hadn’t Been For Love,” “Heaven Sent,” and “Where Rainbows Never Die.”

The Weeks

Mississippi-based band The Weeks originated in Jackson in 2006. Since then, they have been consistently releasing locally-acclaimed music and have come out with a handful of notable records in the southern rock genre they occupy. The most notable is their 2013 album Dear Bo Jackson, from which comes all three recommendations: “Dear Bo Jacks0n,” “Ain’t My Stop,” and “Brother in the Night.”

Bob Marley and The Wailers

This legendary reggae group, headed by musical icon Bob Marley, is one of the most popular reggae groups of all time. The group’s style transcends generations of Jamaican music to create timeless classics such as “I Shot the Sheriff,” “Waiting In Vain,” and “One Love.”
