The Sensational Lucy Cavett

“Lucy Cavett is a completely selfless, loving, and kind friend who is always pushing everyone around her to be better versions of themselves. She will drop anything to help a friend which is one of my favorite things about her. She is a forever friend that I know will be there for me whenever I need her.” – Kate Abraham
A Mississippi girl through and through, Lucy Cavett came to Ole Miss just as the majority of her family members did before her. An accounting major from Jackson, Mississippi, Cavett’s classic yet cool style rejects the textbook image of a stereotypical professional in her future field. Valuing her personal style is what drove Cavett to seek out the fashion community on campus at Ole Miss.
“During my freshman year, I found out there was an organization called Fashion Society and we would make collages and talk about things that we wanted to do, but it wasn’t until Alexi Alonso came along and created Velvet Magazine, now Square Magazine, that we were really able to bring our ideas to life, ” Cavett said.
After serving as the magazine’s social media manager during its inaugural year, Cavett was promoted to co-Editor-in-Chief alongside Rachel Long, with whom she approached the School of Journalism and New Media with a proposition to turn what had been an exclusively digital magazine into a tangible publication.
“Turning this idea into a reality was so exciting,” Cavett said. “Our advisor, Dr. Wenger, was extremely helpful and she gave us her full support without any hesitation. The fact that all of our ideas have actually come to life is so crazy. I love that you can dream about something as big as a print magazine can become a reality.”
Whether she’s working on the magazine, walking with a friend, or enjoying a night on the Square, Cavett’s style is classic at its core. “I love adding a slight edge to a classic look. A white button-down shirt with washed-out jeans is always a hit that will never go out of style.”
Just like most sartorially obsessed 20-somethings, Cavett pulls lots of inspiration from social media. Even though Instagram serves as a great pool of outfit ideas, Cavett recalls always having a creative mind that drew her toward fashion and design. “I remember redecorating the house when I was little, and I actually repainted my own room when I was six or seven. I have always loved the way that things look, aesthetically I mean. Things are always more enjoyable when they are enjoyable to look at.”
Cavett seeks out the beauty in all parts of life and is always looking at things from a creative angle thanks to her childhood which encouraged her to follow her unique instincts. It should come as no surprise that she fell in love with the world of fashion. When she’s shopping, she tends to gravitate toward neutral tones but she loves to shake up an outfit with a surprise pop of color.
Cavett – in the company of every other fashion fanatic – has a never-ending wishlist. After three years of pining, she caved and added the Melina vegan leather pants from Aritzia to her wardrobe. Even though she’s in tune with the latest trends, Cavett believes in the power of a curated wardrobe that consists of a strong base of classics and fun statement pieces that will last a lifetime.
Now that her time at Ole Miss has come to a close, Cavett has started focusing on her future which she hopes will consist of lots of travel when she’s not working. Oxford, New York City, Dallas, and beyond, Cavett’s stylish step is going to make unignorable footprints no matter where she ends up.
