Square Spotlight: Janie Cagle
By: Elena Ossoski
Janie Cagle is a freshman from Houston, Texas, here at the University of Mississippi. Cagle came to the university unsure of her major, but she will begin to specialize in the Integrated Marketing Communications program through the School of Journalism next semester. Cagle is also a very involved member here at Square Magazine, currently working as an integral member of our social team.
How would you describe yourself to someone who has never met you before?
“Very classy with a bit of an edge.”
Do you value personal style in yourself as well as in others?
“Yes, very much so. It’s always been a way to express myself, and I tend to dress for my mood. I’ll throw on something pink with ruffles when I’m full of joy, but some days you can see me wearing black from head to toe when I’m not in the best mood.”
What has had the most significant impact on the way you dress?
“My mom and my mimi too because she is always dressed to the nines. She reminds me of Coco Chanel because her style has always been very classy and full of grace.”
Where do you draw inspiration from?
“I love to see the season's big trends by looking at the runway images from high-end designers. I’ll look at the new Yves Saint Laurent or Chanel collection online to find out what the runway trends are for every season and try to find concepts or specific items that can be incorporated into my style. For example, I recognized a plaid pattern throughout some of the shows, so I’m currently on the lookout for some good plaid pieces.”
Does your social media usage influence the way you dress?
“For sure, but I try to do my own thing because I'm not too fond of copying. There are a few influencers on Instagram that I love to get inspiration from, like Arielle Charnas, who is my favorite blogger of all time. Also, I’ve curated my explore page by only clicking on fashion-related posts so that I can always go there for inspiration. Instagram in general, has influenced how I dress and shop; I am always looking at it when I’m shopping so that I know exactly what I’m looking for.”
Do you have people or brands that you follow that you look to for inspiration?
“I love the way LoveShackFancy styles their pieces… it’s so beautiful. I like to follow Alice & Olivia even though their pieces can sometimes be a hit or miss for me. Also, Arielle Charnas’s brand, Something Navy, is one of my favorites as well.”
Where do you tend to shop?
“Bandier is my favorite right now for athletic clothes, LoveShackFancy, Nasty Gal has good bodysuits, Something Navy, and I look at the Zara website every single to shop as well as pickup outfit inspiration.”
Do you have a favorite piece in your closet right now?
“My Gucci loafers. They describe my sense of style. I did not bring them to school with me, though, so I cannot wait to be back in Houston and wear them out and about.”
Do any of your clothes have sentimental value?
“Definitely! I bought a gorgeous cuff bracelet at Chanel with all of the money that I had saved up; it was my first big purchase. I bought it for myself when my family and I were in New York at Christmas one year.”
What is your favorite outfit you have ever worn?
“I love that question! It is difficult to pick just one, but one of my favorites was a blazer resting on my shoulders over a black tank paired with pink ruffle-trim shorts and my loafers.”
Do you think your childhood has had an impact on the way you dress today?
“My mom was very particular. She dressed my two sisters and me in a very classy manner when we were young, but I would not change that aspect of my childhood because it has shaped me into who I am and how I dress today. My twin and I still like to color coordinate our outfits for events because it’s so fun to get dressed up together.”
Is there anything that you don’t have right now but that you have your eye on?
“Chanel booties that are embellished with pearls.”
Have you ever regretted an outfit choice or purchase?
“Nope. Everything I’ve ever shopped for or worn is something that expresses what I truly wanted at some point in my life.”
What do you think makes your style stand out?
“When it comes to clothes, I try to pick out pieces that no one else has. I never want to be wearing the same thing as the person standing next to me. Even if a piece is “out of style” or trending at the moment, I’m still going to wear it if it is an item that I love and makes me happy.”
