Square Spotlight: Phoebe Goodwin
Square Spotlight: Phoebe Goodwin
By: Elena Ossoski
In part with our Square Spotlight series, Phoebe Goodwin, an Integrated Marketing Communications major here at Ole Miss, recently sat down with us to talk about her style and how she has curated her wardrobe over the years.
How would you describe your style to someone who has never met you?
“My style is simple with a little spunk. I like to make a statement, but I do it subtly. I do not like to look or be boring, so I tend to dress in whatever makes me feel good about myself.”
Flats or heels?
“Flats--but platforms. I love to wear sneakers that have some height to them.”
Denim or leather?
“Denim.”
Do you like to dress up or down?
“I love to dress up, but I dress down more. If I could dress up every day, I would.”
What do you typically wear around campus?
“I wish I dressed up more, but my “dressed-up” is still pretty casual. I usually just wear my Hoka sneakers paired with shorts and a shirt. Although, after a few days of wearing only workout clothes, I start to feel gross. So I will switch it up then and pair my jean shorts with a cool t-shirt.”
Has your style changed since coming to Ole Miss?
“My style has not changed much recently, but it did very frequently in high school. I was testing out different pieces to figure out what I enjoy wearing until I learned how to shop for myself and my taste. Now, I have fewer clothes, but they are all items that I love and wear constantly. “
What is your favorite thing to wear?
“I love to wear dresses and anything girly. My favorite thing to do is pair little white sneakers with a super feminine dress because that is what I feel the most confident in. That is why I love the Outdoor Voices exercise dress so much--it is girly, but practical. “
What makes you want to add a new piece to your wardrobe?
“Clothes have a huge effect on your mood. My closet is only full of pieces that I feel my best in and make me feel confident. I enjoy seeing what clothes other people choose to wear because it gives you an insight into something that brings them joy and makes them feel good. I know that when I love what I am wearing, I am going to have a good day.”
Do you have a favorite piece of clothing?
“My favorite pieces are the ones that look and feel natural while I am wearing them. I love dresses that flow. One of my favorites is this lavender dress with big yellow straps made from ribbon; it is just so sweet and easy to wear. Plus, I got a great deal on it at a warehouse sale.”
Is there anything you wish you could add to your wardrobe?
“I love this white mini dress with puff sleeves, which is embellished with a beautiful, pink traditional china pattern. The puff sleeves give off a feminine flare, which reminds me of what my mom wore in the ’80s. If my kids are going to think that this trend is ugly, then I am going to wear it while I can and bask in its popularity.”
Which is more important, comfort or style?
“You do not have to sacrifice style to be comfortable, but I value comfort over style. If something is not comfortable - no matter how cute it is - I will not wear it.”
Who inspires your wardrobe?
“There is a Youtuber named Marla Catherine that I am completely inspired by even though she is younger than I am. Her style is classic, natural, and simple, but she styles her outfits in a way that she never appears boring.”
Do you tend to gravitate towards neutrals or bold colors?
“Neutrals, but I like to pair them with a pop of color or something with a print. I wear my cow print Converse with just about everything.”
Why do you value personal style?
“I think personal style is important and that everyone thinks about it, even if they are doing so subconsciously. It is a great way for everyone to show off a bit of personality without having to say anything. Certain pieces may not be for me, but they could work perfectly for someone else’s style which I find so interesting.”
