The Best Rom-Coms to Watch This Valentine’s Day

The Best Rom-Coms to Watch This Valentine’s Day

By: Kate Kimberlin

The middle of February, romantic comedies on cable, and heart-shaped chocolates appearing in every grocery store can only mean one thing: Valentine’s Day is around the corner. While the bombardment of red and pink hearts can coincide with dressing up for fancy dinners or giving lavish gifts, a great rom-com can always suffice for a more casual holiday celebration. Here are five movies that can get you in the romantic spirit this Valentine’s Day.

How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days

A classic that just celebrated its tenth anniversary, this film has a surprising all-star cast of Kate Hudson, Matthew McConaughy, Katherine Hahn, and Bebe Neurth. The film follows an advertising executive (McConaughy) in a bet to make a woman fall in love with him in ten days. The woman he chooses is journalist Andy Anderson (Hudson) who is writing a column about things women do wrong in relationships entitled “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.” Over the course of the ten days, the pair gets to know each other in a chaotic yet endearing set of dates, tricks, and hilarious antics.

How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days is available to stream on Paramount+.

50 First Dates

Starring funny-man Adam Sandler and the incomparable Drew Barrymore, 50 First Dates is another great example of a classic romantic comedy. Set in Hawaii, commitment-phobe Henry Roth (Sandler) is believed to have finally found the girl of his dreams in Lucy (Barrymore), who he later discovers to have short-term memory loss and forgets him the next day.

50 First Dates is available to stream on Peacock.

Roman Holiday

A staple in any fashionista’s catalog, this film stars silver-screen icons Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. Hepburn plays a touring European princess who, while taking a night off in Rome, falls asleep on a park bench. Peck, playing an American reporter, finds her, and takes her to the safety of his apartment, but does not discover her identity until the next day. While Peck’s character promises an exclusive to his editor, love soon gets in the way.

The film is available to stream on Paramount+.

Palm Springs

Palm Springs is a newer take on the romantic comedy genre, with a substantial cult following. Andy Samberg and Cristin Millioti star as two wedding guests in Palm Springs that fall in love while living the same day in a time loop and trying to discover how to get out of it.

Palm Springs is available to stream on Hulu.

Your Place or Mine

Recent release Your Place or Mine follows the life-changing journey of two best friends played by Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher. The duo play inseparable friends that live across the country, with Witherspoon’s Debbie in Los Angeles and Kutcher’s Peter in New York. When the opportunity arises for Debbie to pursue a career advancing in New York, Peter switches places with her to watch her son in Los Angeles. Antics, chaos, and love ensues.

Your Place or Mine is available to stream on Netflix.

No matter if you are watching alone or with a loved one, a romantic comedy is a simple yet effective way to get in the spirit of Valentine’s Day. With the genre having a healthy mix of staples and fresh takes, there is something for everyone.
