World-renowned fashion designer and trailblazer of modern tailoring Giorgio Armani passed away on Sept. 4 at the age of 91.
Since the inception of his eponymous luxury brand Armani in 1975, Armani has completely deconstructed not only formalwear, but the fashion industry as a whole.
Armani gained global recognition following his impressive styling work for the 1980 film American Gigolo. His fresh take on the traditional, structured suit shook up the fashion industry—challenging gender stereotypes and causing men and women to question the true definition of the “power suit.”
As the fashion mogul famously said, he was the first to “soften the image of men and harden the image of women.” Armani’s soft tailoring, smooth silhouettes, and tasteful minimalism helped him design functional and comfortable suits that maintained the sophistication many expected from traditional formalwear.
Over the years, Armani expanded his fashion empire. His designs have become red carpet favorites due to his signature Armani flair. From cascading gowns to structured blazers, Armani has consistently created fashion-forward pieces with an essence of simplicity and elegance.
For 50 years, Armani’s progressive designs have impacted societal and cultural norms just as much as they have the fashion industry. He poured his heart and soul into his craft—changing the world one stitch and drape at a time. Armani will be remembered as a fashion pioneer with a strong sense of authenticity, a devotion to elegance, and a legacy that will withstand the ever-changing world of fashion.
