Accessorizing with Gloves Makes an Unforeseen Comeback

Accessorizing with Gloves Makes an Unforeseen Comeback

In case you have not noticed, gloves are back. My Instagram and Pinterest feed have become filled with the trend, especially after Billie Eilish and Beyoncé took the stage at the Grammys gloved up. Are gloves a fashion statement, a form of post-pandemic protection, or an alluring blend of both? Fashion is constantly changing from one second to the next, but one thing that does not change is the hold it has over society.

For centuries people have been slipping gloves over their hands for status, warmth, style, and protection. By the fourteenth century, gloves had become an essential item of status, even for the lower class. Soft hands were a sign of prosperity, so the working class could “glove up” to hide their hard-working hands. Today, parallels can be seen between this concept and today’s glove accesorizers. Gloves elevate any outfit and make for a more glamorous look, maybe even making you appear more prosperous.

During that same time period, gloves were also used as a form of protection against diseases. The ongoing world pandemic gifted us with  numerous new trends including the face mask, so I can’t help but wonder if the glove trend was also a byproduct of it.

In the recent Sex and the City revival, And Just Like That…, fashion icon Carrie Bradshaw puts on her bejeweled diamond gloves as she heads down the elevator. Of course, Carrie’s COVID precautions come with the utmost style. The scene places a clear post-pandemic lens on Carrie’s new endeavors, which is obviously unique to the revival of the late 1990s/early 2000s original show.

In the past, we’ve seen designers and celebrities flaunting their fashion-forward gloves, but it wasn’t until this year that the rest of the fashion world caught on. Statement gloves are having their moment because they add intrigue and give your outfit a more glamorous look.
