Christian Dior Spring 2023 Ready-to-Wear

Christian Dior Spring 2023 Ready-to-Wear

By: Kate Kimberlin

Paris Fashion Week began this week, with Christian Dior kicking things off as the first big fashion house. The Dior fashion house, founded in 1925 by Christian Dior, has always been highly regarded in France and around the world. The house, having dressed countless celebrities through the decades, is most known for pioneering women’s fashion after World War II. Creative Director Maria Grazia Churi, recently known for her intellectual and elaborate runways, took inspiration for this show from 16th-century ruler and feminist icon Catherine de’ Medici. Known for being an early adopter of high heels and hoop skirts, the collection honors her in a gothic, high-fashion way.

The collection overall, while moody for a spring collection, is unique and clever down to the last detail. From the accessories and makeup to the castle-inspired set, the collection proves why the house continues to be a pioneer in the industry, while still being able to explore its roots in women's fashion and femininity.

The Tone

The heavy use of dark, monochromatic looks is something that is not typically found in a spring collection, but makes sense when considering the muse for the show. Many of the looks are more structured, with hoop skirts and corsets dominating the runway. Despite the darker mood, there are still lots of golds and florals that tie the collection back into spring. This is a beautiful balance of the feminine aspects of spring collections and the darker, structured looks typically found in the 16th century.

The Textures

Churi plays with textures throughout the collection in a very clever way. There are mixes of gold hardware, black lace, and mesh with flowing white jersey that could all be found in the same outfit. This not only adds to the overall tone of the collection but highlights just how much Churi studied the 16th century and made it her own. From the elaborate gold hoop skirts and structured patterned trench coats to modern denim, Churi’s take on the 16th-century feminist icon is unique and detailed in every piece.
