Saint Laurent Spring 2023 Ready-to-Wear

By: Millie Conn

Creative director Anthony Vaccarello presented Saint Laurent’s spring-summer collection at Paris Fashion Week. The runway was specifically centered in the Jardins du Trocadero and Fontaine de Varsovie. Perfectly lined rows of black wooden seats, soft golden light, an orchestra playing, and of course, an iconic backdrop of the Eiffel Tower. Vaccarello is an Italian fashion designer known for creating a capsule collection for Versace in 2014. It was announced in 2016 that Saint Laurent would be stealing Vaccarello from Versace, and appointing him as creative director. Since then, Vaccarello has been dedicated to showcasing the city of Paris in the usual Saint Laurent form.

Sheer Textiles

Sheer and translucent looks were very prominent in this collection. The fabric appearance showcased draping and ruching, which added dimension to each piece. The clothing appeared to be one with the models, moving with their every step, a nod to the delicate and tasteful design of each piece.

Leather

Leather has always been and will continue to be prominent in every staple wardrobe. Vaccarello focused on elevating the classic leather jacket with new floor length styles and a loose fit that brings some elegance to the otherwise hard texture.  The delicate fabrics overlain with leather combine to create an interesting and complex look that can still be replicated off the runway.

Hoods

Hoods were all the rage in this year’s collection, the look is closely associated with the popular hooded “capuchin” pieces from the mid-1980s. This architectural style technique was only made possible by the luxurious fabrics chosen, draping perfectly across the models and moving with them as they walked to create personality in each outfit.

This collection shows the truth of Parisian fashion. Saint Laurent will be bound to its effortless, chic, and radiant birthplace forever. Each look tells a story with the combination of these three details tying the collection together. Many looks included multiple elements at once. For instance, some looks had sheer draping, hoods, and leather items. It is no surprise that Vaccarello will forever be admired for this show.
