Berlin Fashion Week took a deep-dive into sustainability this year with labels like #DAMUR bringing the conversation to center stage in their runway shows. #DAMUR is a high-end streetwear label based in Berlin and focused on upcycling fashion design. Founder and Creative Director Damur Huang started the label in 2015 and this year’s “Reviver” show presented a collection that was the culmination of the past seven year’s designs.
The concept of the collection was the idea of a second life, with old collection pieces being upcycled to create a new line of dresses. By reusing materials from past collections, #DAMUR continues their tradition of using mostly deadstock material and minimizing their carbon footprint as much as possible.
The collection uses denim as its primary material, with different washes being woven together to create interesting dimension and movement within the pieces. Many of these pieces are accented with brightly colored stitching throughout the design.
Each of the models wore headpieces made of flowers that were at the end of their life cycle to further encourage the notions of fresh starts and second chances. This concept was even a key part of choosing the models themselves, the brand claims, as they only cast people who have been through a difficult life experience.
Sustainability in the fashion industry has been a hot topic of discussion, and it is refreshing to see brands like #DAMUR doing their part in encouraging ethical and sustainable shopping practices. Fashion houses across the world should be looking to Berlin as they move toward making streetwear more sensible.
