Director’s Pick: The Best Looks from the 2022 Met Gala

Director’s Pick: The Best Looks from the 2022 Met Gala

By: Molly Roberts

It’s that time of year again, time for the Met Gala. The fashion event of the year has finally returned to its normal date: the first Monday in May. This year, the gala continued its celebration of American fashion with “In America: Anthology of Fashion''. Vogue identified this year's dress code as “Gilded Glamour”. Once again, the Square Magazine directors watched in anticipation to find the best looks from this star-studded night. Without further adieu, we are thrilled to share our favorite looks filled with gilded age glam.

Elena Ossoski, Editor-In-Chief

“Kate Moss in Burberry. The dress was the perfect combination of British and American style. The classic men’s evening wear inspired silhouette and detailing fit the theme while staying true to her personal style.”

“Blake Lively in Versace. Her attention to detail is inspiring. The whole look is an ode to New York City which is arguably the only place in the United States where ‘Gilded Glamour’ can still be found in modern-day.”

“Alexa Chung in Christian Siriano. Everything about the dress screams old Hollywood. The color, fit, and fabric create a gown that would feel at home in the costume wardrobe on the set of any Grace Kelly film.”

Molly Roberts, Editor-In-Chief

“Maude Apatow in Miu Miu is definitely one of my favorite looks from the Met Gala. She looked absolutely stunning in an embellished sheer gown with slick hair waves and a diamond choker. Her Cartier jewelry further added elegance to complete the look.  She looked like someone plucked her straight out of an old Hollywood film. I love that she stayed a lot closer to the theme than many other celebrities.”

“Another favorite Met Gala look of mine is Kiki Layne in Prabal Gurung. She took my breath away when I saw her in a pink gown, pink satin Stuart Weitzman platforms, long white gloves, matching eye makeup, and a perfectly shaped afro. Her eye makeup was mesmerizing and was done by handpicking the petals off of her dress and placing them on her lids. I thought that her look was such a beautiful celebration of black beauty all while still upholding the theme of ‘Gilded Glamour.’”

Tessa McLane, Social Media Director

“Hailey Bieber stepped out in a floor-length Saint Laurent gown. Her classy minimalist look stood out to me because it showed the timeless beauty of the silhouette while her feather cape gave it a trendier spice and paid homage to Jerry Hall. She was a classic beauty as always.”

“Evan Mock and Dakota Johnson were also two eye-catching looks because I feel like they both had a touch of femininity and masculinity woven into them. Dakota Johnson’s rock and roll Gucci jumpsuit stood out among the gowns we saw and had all the glitz and glamour we expected from the attendees. Evan Mock arrived in a suit made by Head of State and it was a head-turner. The silhouette and color leaned towards the feminine side, but was still very on theme. These two were in my top three because it shows fashion's transition into pieces being more gender fluid and men and women being able to wear similar styles and still look gorgeous.”

Haley Clift, Social Media Director

“Amy Griffin’s stunning diamond earrings caught my eye when I first saw her on the red carpet. I love her look because it is a timeless, classic look that reminded me of old Hollywood “Gilded Glamour”. The standout diamonds, paired with the slicked back bun, and the black and ecru formalwear created an iconic moment that will stick with me to remind me how classic never fades and how accessories can transform a look.”

“Amber Valletta aced the “Gilded Glamour” look from head-to-toe, literally gilded in a geometric gown, standout jewels, rockstar clutch, and stunning stilettos. Not one detail of her outfit was overlooked, and the hues of black and gold throughout the look shone on the red carpet.”

Kaitlyn Steinroeder, Creative Planner

“Laura Harrier is my favorite Met look. I love everything from the gloves to the hair. She seriously looks like a princess with a little bit of a modern and edgy twist. I am also obsessed with the 90s glam-inspired makeup look that she’s rocking. The eyeshadow works perfectly with the metallic accents in her dress and jewelry.”

Sheridan Mark, Creative Director

“Caroline Trentini gave us nothing but opulence in Danielle Frankel at the Met Gala 2022. This look radiates straight from the costume closet chic, with an elevated runway silhouette and muted color palette to deliver one of the chicest looks of the night. The gloves pay homage to the evening gloves worn in the Gilded Age, tying her whole ensemble to the theme flawlessly. Her sleek up-do allows the back of the gown to shine, adding even more sleek elegance to the look.”

Millie Conn, Casting Director

“Imaan Hammam was my favorite look from tonight. I loved the light blue color on her, and how flowy it was. The slit and cutouts down her arms still gave her a figure so she wasn’t completely shapeless. I loved how it was pleated, which is said to be very in this upcoming spring/summer season. I thought it was a great statement. I just couldn’t get over the cut of the dress, it was very intentional and fell perfectly on her figure. I thought she tied it in well with the theme by adding the bracelet cuffs and jewel straps in the back. It was very bohemian chic, which is my favorite style.”

Liz Burnet, Business Director

“I love Lily James’s confidence! I’m obsessed with the detail behind every aspect of this dress paired with her sleek hair and bold earrings. Simply amazing.”

Briley Rakow, Copy Editor

“My favorite Met Gala look has got to be Emma Chamberlain. The corset-style top combined with the sleek skirt was such an elegant take on the theme. The jewelry added some glamour, but the overall look remained just understated enough that you were still able to see Emma herself in it.”

Emily Bone, Digital Director

“Lila Grace Moss Hack looked absolutely unforgettable for her first Met Gala appearance. This outfit is subtle while still being totally eye-catching. Burberry used their signature nude color to their favor by topping it with diamonds in the shape of leaves. The layers of leotard, mesh overlay with the Burberry logo, and diamonds make this my favorite because it is elegant and youthful without being flashy or overdone. The mesh also allowed her to showcase her insulin pod and her glucose monitor, bringing awareness to type 1 diabetes. These two medical devices are familiar to me and my family. My sister was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when she was four, and it was very special to see these things normalized on the red carpet.”
