Elevated Staples: How to Balance Bold and Basics
Elevated Staples: How to Balance Bold and Basics

Closet staples are not all created equally. With the talk surrounding personal style and building a wardrobe, it is important to understand what constitutes a staple for you. Staple does not mean plain or uniform, it simply means that it fits into your personal style with ease. Being intentional when choosing staples is important as they are the base of your wardrobe.
Button Downs
If a plain white button-down does not pique your interest or work well with your wardrobe, swap it for a color you wear often or choose an option with unique detailing that matches your style. Button downs are transitional and easy to layer, having a few in your wardrobe can make clothing rotation easier.
Unique Basics
This may seem like a bit of an oxymoron, but basics do not have to be boring. Search for unique textures, colors, and silhouettes when picking basics. Instead of a typical black leather jacket, opt for leather in your signature color. Picking basics that set you apart will keep your personal style in each outfit you wear.
Bold Outfits
Despite popular opinion, there is nothing wrong with repeating outfits. True style is about finding pieces you are comfortable and confident in, and outfits that make you feel that way deserve to be worn more than once. Having a few bold outfits that require minimal accessorizing can help limit the time you spend trying on clothes for whatever function may come up last minute. Stretch out of your comfort zone and find something unique – perhaps a colored pantsuit or embellished cocktail dress – to be your new go-to evening attire. Each special occasion does not need a new outfit; your clothes should work for you, not the other way around.
An article of clothing is only a staple if it will withstand the test of time in your closet. Fill your wardrobe with personal pieces that you will want to wear six months from now and again in ten years.
