Is Color Disappearing?
Is Color Disappearing?
By: Claire Watkiss
Recent conversations in the fashion industry have circulated around the question: is color disappearing from our world? From less colorful cars on the road to more neutral home styles, there has been a complete shift in our world toward minimalism. Even luxury brands such as Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, and Burberry have switched their logos from classic fonts to mainstream black block letters. This leaves us wondering: is the same thing happening to the clothes, shoes, and accessories we choose to put on each day?
Minimalism has risen to the surface of the fashion industry as people begin to focus on keeping their wardrobes sustainable. This has encouraged a movement toward having a capsule wardrobe, full of a few versatile basics. In a capsule wardrobe, you can expect to find items such as a white button-up, black blazer, and light wash pair of jeans. Designed for more neutral pieces, this trend has progressed the movement away from color.
While this minimalist mindset has been gaining prominence, large retailers such as Zara have attracted customers with nothing but colorful items. Their spring and summer collections continue to offer bold colors and patterns.
Can we definitively say that color is disappearing from the fashion world?
What holds true is this: most people have a closet that is full of neutral pieces. They are versatile in the sense that they can create countless looks and appeal to all seasons despite changing trends.
While it is hard to say directly where the fashion industry is headed, it seems that neutrals will always be at the forefront of our wardrobes. Runways and stores will continue to have an array of options, but the fashion industry as a whole will cling to the basics as we move towards a more achromatic world.
