Never Going out of Style

Never Going Out of Style

By: Elizabeth McCubbins

Harry Styles is no stranger to adoration from swarms of teen girls. The former member of One Direction has been a heartthrob ever since his first appearance on X Factor in 2010. However, more recently, Styles has been praised not only for his angelic face (though that is a contributing factor), but also his iconic wardrobe. Since the start of his solo career, the singer has ventured into a unique sense of style that could be likened to that of Mick Jagger and Elton John. Styles has come a long way from the skinny jeans and white tee uniform from his boy band days. From ruffled collars to colorful cardigans, his fashion sense could be described as Retro Grandpa-Chic.

More recently, the internet has exploded over a JW Anderson cardigan that Styles wore at a performance in February.  It originally retailed for $1,560, but that did not deter fans. A trend on TikTok has sparked fans to learn how to crochet and make a cardigan of their own. The designer responded by sharing the sweater’s measurements and a guide on how to make it.

Styles inspired Gen Z to learn how to knit simply by donning a cardigan. That kind of influence is powerful, and thankfully he uses his platform to leave a positive impact. Along with donating money to various organizations such as the #TimesUp Movement, he also gave his hair to Little Princess Trust, and more recently shared his support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

Along with actively working towards bettering the world, Styles has an overall positive demeanor that sparks inclusivity.  Not only does his style encourage self-expression and confidence, but it also proves that gender stereotypes can and should be challenged. He has been vocal about believing that people should not be forced into rigid roles. Men are allowed to define what masculinity means to them, just as women should express femininity however they choose. For Styles, conveying vulnerability through his music and exploring femininity through fashion are how he exhibits masculinity. Styles wears his fingernail polish and pearls with pride, and his superb taste only makes him more attractive.

When it comes to celebrity crushes, Harry Styles is more than a heartthrob; he is a pretty solid role model too. Both girls and guys can draw inspiration from his gender-neutral style, but his giving character is his most admirable quality. He is a talented musician, fashionista, and kind-hearted soul all in one. That kind of reputation will never go out of style.
