Old Hollywood Revival Dominated the Cannes Red Carpet

The 77th annual Cannes Film Festival wrapped up on May 25, 2024. This year’s attendees embraced the vintage styles of the festival’s past. From recreations of historic moments in fashion to new interpretations of beloved styles, these stars know how to make an appearance.
Bella Hadid in Atelier Versace
Hadid stunned in a vintage Versace gown with a plunging neckline and a dipped waist. The dress’s figure-hugging silhouette is emphasized by vertical lines throughout.
Naiomi Campbell in Chanel
Staying true to her runway roots, Campbell first donned this gown for Chanel’s Fall/Winter 1997 show. She modernized the look by removing the black slip that was included in the garment’s original styling.
Jennifer Lawrence in Christian Dior
While her look is not archival, the gown, designed by Dior Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri, is reminiscent of the house’s original designs. Lawrence opted for flip-flops rather than heels, prioritizing her comfort and safety as she ascended the carpet’s many stairs.
Yseult in Dior
Yesuelt revived Dior’s “new look” styles of the 1940s for her second appearance on the festival carpet. The French singer-songwriter’s look was a custom-made, plus-size recreation of Christian Dior’s first collection, underscoring positive evolution for the brand.
Anya Taylor-Joy in Dior Haute Couture
The actress’s glittering gown calls back to the classic silhouettes Grace Kelly frequented in the 1950s. Taylor-Joy kept the look modern with a sculptural silver necklace.
Alton Mason in Louis Gabriel Nouchi
Mason’s non-traditional suit by Louis Gabriel Nouchi features a feather-like pattern and exaggerated hourglass tailoring. He paired the suit with Messika jewelry and multicolored snakeskin boots.
Hunter Schafer in Archival Giorgio Armani Privé
Schaefer’s silk gown debuted in the house’s Spring 2011 collection. The gown’s sculptural design makes a futuristic version of the dress Marilyn Monroe wore to the 1954 premiere of There’s No Business like Show Business.
Alexa Chung in Simone Rocha for John Paul Gaultier Haute Couture
Simone Rocha’s collection for John Paul Gaultier has turned heads since it was first shown in January. Chung added personality to the look with a slicked-back, wet hairstyle.
Elsa Hosk in Prabal Gurung
Leaning into both classic red carpet fashion and the fashion world’s current affinity for white and black, this Prabal Gurung gown features a billowing train and sculptural bust. The Helsa founder completed her look with Tiffany and Co. jewelry.
One can only hope the red carpet excellence displayed by these celebrities continues through 2024.
