Rick Owens Fall 2024 Ready-to-Wear

Barely a month after the world became beguiled by the Rick Owens bubble boots from their fall 2024 menswear collection, the “Lord of Darkness” is back with his fall 2024 ready-to-wear show. Held at his Paris home, Place du Palais-Bourbon, this collection was particularly meaningful to the owner and creative director. Alternatively titled “Porterville” – the name of Owen’s hometown in California – the collection aimed to make a statement and counterbalance the “oppression and intolerance” he experienced during his childhood with what he explains as “cheerful perversity.”
Rick Owens is the master of the avant-garde, motivated by taking risks and finding new ways to push the envelope of fashion, and that is exactly what he achieved through this womenswear collection.
For a brand known for its use of black and neutral tones, this fall collection had a surprisingly large amount of pastels. Muted pinks, yellows, greens, and blues were systematically scattered throughout the collection to break up the monotony that Owen’s dark collections are often known to exhibit.
Besides peculiar masks and black sclera contact lenses, the confusing and captivating leather bubble boots seen in previous collections created a sense of otherworldliness. The models seemed as if they had just returned from walking on the moon, a striking contrast to their surroundings which Owens described as, “gentle, eternal, and raw.”
The perplexing details did not obstruct the functionality of this collection. Form-fitting knit sets were layered with wraps made of sherpa and puffer jacket materials, and beautifully draped ponchos displaying the name “Porterville” proved that the looks were ideal for the crisp fall and winter weather.
The final five looks of the women’s fall collection conveyed femininity in what can only be described as a uniquely Rick Owens approach. Bare-chested models strutted down the runway engulfed in dress-like structures made of sequin tubes, reminiscent of elegant otherworldly creatures.
Rick Owens consistently brings strange yet sophisticated collections to Paris Fashion Week. You never know what innovative item or spooky new character will round the corner, causing his shows to be some of the most anticipated of the season. The fall 2024 ready-to-wear collection proves why he is the king of androgyny and displays his ability to create functional looks while simultaneously expressing his growth as a person and designer.
