The Evolution of Ski Fashion

The Evolution of Ski Fashion

By Audrey Cooper

Ski fashion has evolved immensely over the years, now containing more luxury styles, chic apres ensembles, and retro-inspired pieces by a variety of up-and-coming labels. Celebrities are rocking ski couture on and off the slopes as designers are releasing winter lines more adept at keeping up with both fashion and winter activities.

In the early 1900s, there were very limited ski wear options available for both men and women. Skiers were commonly styled in heavy wool skirts, pants, and jackets in very muted tones. These outfits were very clearly designed for warmth and less for enabling movement or style.

A shift occurred in the 1940s and 1950s with an abundance of new materials, advancements in technology, and more of an interest in couture clothes, allowing ski style to soar. Bogner designed the first ever stretchy pants available for women that were both comfortable and trendy, and Emilio Pucci designed the first one-piece ski suit, complete with bright colors and a form-fitting design.

With the introduction of Spandex in the 1960s, even more slim-fitting onesies gained popularity. Jackets with oversized collars, bell-bottom ski pants, neon colors, leg warmers, moon boots, and psychedelic prints greatly dominated this era.

In the 1980s and 1990s, ski style was able to evolve further with modern fabrics and technologies that allowed skiers to stay warm and dry while hitting the slopes. Bib overalls were also introduced, and the onesie was the go-to ski staple for both men and women.

In the 2000s, mainstream brands began creating ski wear along with luxury brands such as Christian Dior, Prada, and Chanel. Canada Goose and Moncler also came out with puffy coats that showcased their logos, starting a new trend in winter fashion.

Now, we have more options than ever before from a wide range of brands both new and old, all paying homage to the retro aesthetic of ski style. Here are some of the top ski brands to look out for in 2024.

Perfect Moment

Celebrities are loving Perfect Moment, as it is one of the most popular statement ski wear brands with original designs. Styles guarantee warmth, functionality, and top-tier fashion moments, made to be durable and built for performance.

Fusalp

Fusalp was created in 1951 by two tailors from Annecy whose specialty was making ski garments. Many ski professionals and champions such as Annie Famose and Jean-Claude Killy wear Fusalp pieces for their movement and breathability.

Bogner

Worn by Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, Bogner has been renowned as one of the best luxury ski brands since 1932. Former ski champion Willy Bogner was inspired to launch the brand when his wife noticed that there was nothing flattering for women to wear while skiing. The brand has outfitted the German Olympic team since 1936.

Alp N Rock

Alp N Rock is known for being a sustainable brand that utilizes eco-friendly materials such as organic cotton and tencel. High quality materials and creative designs have helped fuel this brand’s rise to the top. Alp n Rock is also dedicated to supporting women with 10% of every purchase made donated to Room to Read, a non-profit funding girls’ education in developing countries.

Patagonia

Celebrities such as Reese Witherspoon, Prince Harry, Kendall Jenner, and Jennifer Garner all wear Patagonia. All the cotton used in Patagonia apparel is grown organically, and six of their lines use recycled materials. Patagonia is dedicated to leading an environmentally responsible and conscious business, as well as ensuring that all of their products are being produced in safe, humane working conditions.

Goldbergh

Goldbergh is a staple ski brand, promoting luxury and quality. Focusing primarily on women’s fashion and creating the perfect fits for sports and ski wear, Goldbergh creates clothing that allows for flow and movement as well as warmth and breathability.

Free People

Free People ski wear includes fitted ski jumpers that are flattering, warm, and functionable as well as a wide range of athletic wear and trendy loungewear perfect for any ski trip.

With brands like these, expect some double takes on the mountains. Ski couture will surely continue to evolve in coming years, but for now it is clear that high fashion does not have to be compromised on a trip to the slopes.
