The Return of the Gucci Belt

The Return of the Gucci Belt

By: Liv Briley

In Gucci’s Fall 2023 Ready-to-Wear collection, recently debuted at Milan Fashion Week, the signature Gucci logo belt was seen in several ensembles, begging the question: is the Gucci belt back? The belt was catapulted to fame in Creative Director Alessandro Michele’s first show in 2015, and has been a huge commercial success ever since. Though slightly more affordable than other Gucci products, and certainly the most recognizable piece from the brand, many knock-off versions have appeared over its tenure. The Gucci belt was a major trend for many years, more wearable than other high fashion products, and now it seems the belt might be making a comeback in the luxury space.

Many living in Oxford, Mississippi and other SEC towns may be wondering if the Gucci belt ever left at all, as its prominence has remained at large since its debut. Whether the real deal or fake versions, the Gucci belt has been considered a status symbol of sorts, with the vast majority of college women having had one in their closet at one point or another. With the runway declaring its renewed support for the piece, we may soon be seeing a resurgence in this beloved accessory right here in Oxford.

This trend itself speaks to the style of Oxford and the social norms that dictate how people tend to dress. With events like game days and sorority functions creating a herd mentality, trends are an essential part of Oxford style. When going out on the Square on a Saturday night, you are sure to see similar continuity between styles, with many outfits sharing a southern boutique quality. The Gucci belt is just one of many examples of how fashion is used as a way of fitting into the Ole Miss community.

When something becomes a trend online, it quickly becomes a trend in Oxford, usually in a much more concentrated way. The Gucci belt, though losing its popularity on a worldwide scale, remained a trend in Oxford for years. Now, with its return to the runway, Oxford is certainly prepared to be on the front lines of its comeback.
