Jil Sander showcased their Spring 2025 Ready-to-Wear men’s and women’s collections at Milan Fashion Week.
The two collections walked the runway intertwined, encapsulating a full visual of what the husband-and-wife creative directors, Lucie and Luke Meier, have been constructing.
The Meier's drew inspiration from Canadian photographer Greg Girard’s series titled “Under Vancouver.” The couple tapped into Girard's moody and fluorescent influence with their unique designs and displayed some of his archival prints on garments.
In true Jil Sander fashion, multiple trench coats of varying lengths crossed the runway. Longer coats were styled solo, and shorter ones accompanied shorts or pants.
The luminescent fabric of the suit paid homage to Girard’s lighting technique—only using street light or the glow of neon signs. The predominant shoulder pads resembled the trend popularized in the 1980s, the birth decade of “Under Vancouver.”
Satin was used in many other looks to achieve the lustrous effect. Most of the satin looks had a gradient, ombre coloring with a few solid-toned looks mixed in.
Three distinctive recurring details in this season of Jil Sander were boots, tassels, and “Lonely Hearts.” All models sported boots, the most common being black or cream, however, the occasional pop of snakeskin and titanium reinforced that Jil Sander makes wearability exciting.
To continue adding a touch of flare, tassel sleeve detailing elevated a traditional coat into a versatile statement piece. The fringe was also seen flowing down from various earrings.
The words “Lonely Hearts” were seen in the forms of pins adoring suits, a silver necklace, and stitched on a singular sweater. Though the Meiers have not explicitly announced the significance of the phrase, there are clues as to what message they are leaving the audience.
The Meiers expressed that this collection was intended to resemble the instability and terror happening in the world, therefore the phrase could be interpreted as a uniting chant and or a personal declaration.
