Best Fashion Moments of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival

The 76th Festival de Cannes wrapped up last week after ten nights of movie premieres, parties, fashion shows, and highly anticipated red carpets. The festival took place from May 16 to May 27, 2023.

Common themes included tulle, feathers, and ruffles. Rich reds, blues, and metallic accents were also popular choices among attendees. The festival saw a return to vintage designs, such as Dior’s “Junon” dress, while simultaneously continuing the year’s red carpet trends, such as transparent fabrics, metallic accents, and cut-out details.

Cannes also saw a rejection of the no-necklace trend which dominated earlier this year as stars such as Elle Fanning and Aja Naomi King opted for sparkling statement pieces when accessorizing their looks.

Natalie Portman in Dior

Perhaps the most notable of the week, Portman donned a recreation of Christian Dior’s “Junon” dress. The dress debuted in 1949 as a part of Dior’s Fall/Winter collection. The original is currently in the custody of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. It is named for the Roman goddess, Juno, also known as the Greek goddess Hera. Portman wore the dress to the premiere of her upcoming film, May December.

Cindy Bruna in Vivienne Westwood and Ruslan Baginskiy

Bruna took 2023’s no-pants trend to unseen heights during the premiere of Club Zero. The French model styled a corsetted Vivianne Westwood bodysuit with a hat by Ukrainian designer Ruslan Baginskiy and Celmont jewelry.

Elsa Hosk in Viktor & Rolf

Swedish model Elsa Hosk garnered significant attention online with this undone Cinderella-esque gown by Viktor & Rolf. Titled “Late Stage Capitalism Waltz,” the gown was unveiled as a part of the brand’s Spring/Summer 2023 Haute Couture Collection.

Elle Fanning in Alexander McQueen

The gown, made custom for Fanning, features the bodice seen on look 53 of the brand’s Fall/Winter 2023 collection and a one-of-a-kind pink tulle skirt. The look was accentuated by Cartier’s Perles de Diamants necklace.

Fanning wore the “dress of dreams” to the premiere of Jeanne du Barry, a French historical drama that stars Johnny Depp as Louis XV.

Fan Bingbing in Georges Hobeika

Chinese actress Fan Bingbing wore a stunning ombre feathered gown from Gorges Hobeika’s Spring 2023 Couture line. She allowed the dress to shine, opting for an updo and minimal jewelry. Earrings and a ring by De Beers Jewels served as her only accessories.

Viola Davis in Valentino

Davis dazzled the red carpet for the premiere of the Japanese film Monster in this shimmering cloud of feathers. She paired the Valentino coat with a white gown of the same house, featuring a floral appliqué atop the single shoulder strap. Davis accessorized the look with diamond hoops by Chopard and white platforms.

Leonie Hanne in Georges Hobeika

German model and influencer Leonie Hanne donned this custom Georges Hobeika gown to the premiere of The Idol. The look was completed with transparent Aquazzura heels and Tiffany & Co Jewelry.

Aja Naomi King in Gaurav Gupta

How To Get Away With Murder’s Aja Naomi King wore a gown of flowing sequins that featured an asymmetric sculptural neckline and cutout at the waist to the screening of the newest film in the Indiana Jones franchise. She finished the look with Piaget jewelry.

The red carpets of the Cannes Film Festival transcended expectations. Movie stars and premiere invitees’ exquisite dressing throughout the festival established harmony between classic and contemporary fashions, as ensembles posed a continuation of trends seen during awards season and at the 2023 MET Gala while allowing unconventional garments, such as Viktor & Rolf’s “Late Stage Capitalism Waltz” and Vivienne Westwood’s bodysuit to shine. As the year continues, it is certain that these pieces will provide an eccentric foundation upon which red carpet styles may find inspiration.
