Christian Dior Spring/Summer 2024 Haute Couture

An installation entitled Big Aura by Isabella Ducrot adorned the halls of the 2024 Dior couture show at the Rodin Museum Gardens. The installation was composed of 23 dresses around five meters high and deliberately disproportionate dimensions of the human body. The dresses on the walls resembled the outfits of the Ottoman sultans studied by Ducrot, symbolizing the uniqueness and power of the designs.

Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri believes that Big Aura is what pervades haute couture as the reproduction of the original piece is never exactly the same. Each piece is altered to the body of the wearer, and therefore maintains its own atmosphere and style. The designs throughout the show exemplify the agelessness of history, yet magnify it to modern relevance, keeping audiences on their toes.

As the models gracefully walked the runway, the colorways advanced from shades of gold to eventually green, marking a shift in the seasons. As the color scheme shifted, the style of the outfits did as well, beginning with trench-coats and layers and then moving into smaller waisted dresses influenced by 1950’s silhouettes and designs. Although the shapes of the dresses reminisced on the archived classics, they were reimagined as more contemporary and captivating. The coats appeared embellished in imposing collars, wide skirts were detailed with cut-outs, layers were gorgeously overlapping, and there were wide varieties of pants and jackets.

The glowing assortment of accessories included black velvet detailing, choker necklaces lined with pearls, hair ribbons intertwined in and out of the model’s hair, elaborate embroidery, and stunning statement rings all of which created an innovative yet effortlessly classy look. The carefully crafted lighting of the room allowed for the accessories to sparkle and glow, specifically the embroidery, which moved within each design.

The overall effect of the show through the lens of Maria Grazia Chiuri's impressive creativity brought an expression of imagination and beauty. Chiuri takes on the challenge of creating options for women of all shapes and sizes, which opens up Dior for all to enjoy and taste.
