Flea Market Finds for the Home

Flea Market Finds for the Home

By: Hailey Layne

As the weather cools down, many will retreat indoors. Whether you are looking to spruce up your surroundings or explore your town’s local businesses, antique malls, flea markets, or second hand shops can offer hidden treasures. Part of the satisfaction of finding something special is the search for it among decades of history. Not all flea market finds are created equal; below are some common items to look for when shopping for vintage pieces.

Wicker Baskets

Wicker products became popular in America during the 1960s, and many of those pieces have made their way into antique shops across the country. Formed out of a variety of grasses, natural wicker materials can last 10-15 years depending on proper care. Rattan products are often used interchangeably with the term wicker. Wicker refers to the style of weaving used while rattan plants are often utilized in the material. Natural wicker is not waterproof, but synthetic wicker products made with resin are more suited for outdoors as they are water resistant. Synthetic wicker increased in commercial products in the early 2000s. Items like wicker baskets can be used in the home to store blankets, books, or hung as part of a gallery wall. During the fall, the baskets can add a coziness to an austere space.

Mirrors & Picture Frames

Some of the most beautiful craftsmanship can be seen through ornate picture frames or/and their corresponding mirrors. Older mirrors can add character to any room even with small flaws; some glass can take on a smoky appearance due to age. Analyzing pieces for signs of warping can prevent further decay once items are brought home. Labels on the back of a frame and the weight of some frames can indicate their quality. Real wood frames are typically heavier than polyresin or other synthetic materials.

Candlestick Holders

Whether adorning a mantle or being utilized in a tablescape, candlesticks can add to the holiday season. Year-round candles can be replaced to fit the needs of a home. Recently, candlesticks made of brass featuring a gold finish have increased in popularity, but ceramic and glass varieties can add a funky touch to any kind of decor. Mixing different heights can add dimension to a lacking display.

Glassware

Glassware offers a utilitarian purpose as well as an opportunity to show one’s personality through their dishware. Ranging from handmade ceramic mugs to depression era goblets, antique malls usually contain hundreds of pieces to mix and match. Finding glassware to fit a party theme or holiday tablescape has never been more accessible.

Exploring the local flea market scene not only offers adventure, but the chance to give an item a second life. In the interest of sustainable holiday home decor, the local resale shop could be holding the piece that brings the home together.
