Oxford Farmers’ Markets

Oxford Farmers’ Markets

By: Briley Rakow

Farmers’ markets may bring up images of springtime in full bloom, but with the beautiful fall weather in Oxford, farmers’ markets can be enjoyed for much more of the year. Oxford is home to several farmers’ markets that operate in the fall months offering fresh, local produce and artisan goods to the entire community.

Perhaps the most well-known is the Oxford Community Market located at 1801 University Ave. and open Tuesdays from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Growers and producers from around the area bring everything from fresh fruits and veggies to bread and jams. The nonprofit organization is focused on addressing food insecurity in the Oxford area and promoting health and wellness. Not only do they do this through their market, but also local programs including food drives and garden projects.

Midtown Farmers’ Market is conveniently located in the Midtown Shopping Center on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 7 to 11 a.m., so you can shop around if you (inevitably) find yourself waiting to be seated at Big Bad Breakfast. You can pick from a variety of grass-fed meats, fresh-baked desserts, and flowers from Farmstead Florals. The market updates its Facebook page every week so you can always see exactly what options are available on any given day.

A slightly more unconventional farmers’ market can be found at Chicory Market, a small, local grocer. Located at 274 County Road 101, Chicory Market offers all the fresh produce, baked goods, and homemade meal options of a farmers’ market with regular grocery store hours. You can order curbside grocery pickup or go inside to pick out your items, and if you happen to be hosting an event or tailgate, they have delicious catering options, as well.

Whatever their form, farmers’ markets are a great way to support local farmers and businesses while also ensuring you have the freshest ingredients in your home. Spring or fall, quality goods from quality people are always worth a trip.
