Spring/Summer 2024 Proves That the Trend Cycle Is Not Dead

Spring/Summer 2024 Proves That the Trend Cycle Is Not Dead

By: Emma Greene

The spring and summer 2024 runway season leaves much anticipation for warmer months. Designers in New York, Paris, Milan, and more brought a sense of wearability defined by unconventional colors combined with cuts and styles reminiscent of the turn of the millennium. This season’s cohesivity across shows and cities has not been seen throughout a season since the pre-pandemic era.

After an undefinable few years within the industry and the synchronous rise and fall of countless internet microtrends, spring/summer 2024 reassures consumers and industry professionals alike that fashion’s traditional 20-to-30-year trend cycle is alive and well.

Among the most prominent sources of inspiration were reinterpretations of the 1960s via 1990s influence and Y2K menageries which abounded to create a rousing season, complete with exquisite blends of professional and playful garments.

Dropped Waists

Reminiscent of 1990s and 2000s styles, dropped waist dresses and skirts secured their place on runways this season. Following the lasting popularity of low-rise waists in both streetstyle and high fashion, this comes as no surprise. The versatile silhouette is currently gaining most of its traction in the formal and bridal spheres, although everyday iterations cannot be far behind.

Sheer Everything

General affinity for the naked dress and related sheer garments will continue through the next several months. Like low-rise bottoms, sheer items have maintained a steady rise in popularity throughout the past few seasons. The use of ornate laces and crochet patterns as well as simpler gauzy fabrics offer a variety that many trends cannot provide, making it likely these sultry styles stick around.

Unconventional Coloring

While traditionally warm-weather colors such as white, yellow, and pastels will remain essential to the spring wardrobe in 2024, unexpected hues of red, royal blues, and the acid green of mod and punk days past found their way onto several runways this season.

The pre-fall runway season is likely to be one of expanded palettes all around, as even The Row, a label known for its neutral hues, featured pops of color from powder blue to burnt orange and pine green in their pre-fall 2024 collection, shown at the most recent Paris Fashion Week.

Red

Dazzling SS24 runways and social media alike, red is fashion’s current favorite color. Both easily wearable and eye-catching, shades from maraschino to oxblood and burgundy defined September’s shows.

Short Hemlines

Longer hemlines have dominated runways and street style for the past year or so, however, mini and micro hemlines will soon take back the throne. From Miu Miu and Gucci’s micro shorts to Ferragamo’s pant-free styling, leg-emphasizing looks will prevail in the spring of 2024.

Bows & Flowing Lace

Foreshadowed by the internet’s sustained love for so-called ballet core and coquette styles, romantic bows and lace were mainstays of the season. This appreciation for unabashed femininity calls upon childhood nostalgia for many.

September proved that while style is ever-evolving, some things, like the trend cycle, never change. The pendulum must always swing back, bringing with it reinterpretations of styles long past as well as an unexpected vibrance that keeps us in eager anticipation for what is to come.
